Project Title - Electromagnetic Travel aid for the blind
“It’s hard to be independent” – Response from a survey asking questions about life as a blind person. Navigation is one of the most complicated problems. Not only is independence affected, but their confidence and ability to perceive the environment around them. Newly tested, tried and highly effective electromagnetic travel aid technology has meant that people with visual impairment can avoid obstacles, with notification by haptic and audio feed back.
The device range is 12 meters, a high frequency provides detection through textiles, fitting in a 10cm match box. Objective - to utilise this technology for an assistive device, incorporating textures, form, feel with ease of use attributes. The technology was simulated through Arduino modules under controlled empathy research techniques. The sensor module comes with a charging dock using a tactile battery that allows touch of charge level. Waist strap with embedded vibration motors allowing touch perception of their environment.
